Social Media Optimization (SMO) is the answer ( kind of). First, we need to define the term. According to Sprout Social, “Social Media Optimization is essentially using social media as a catalyst to grow your company’s online presence.”

 

Simply said a strong social media presence alongside blog postings can help your company grow online. When your company has social media and blog posts that people are engaging with, it helps to boost you up on search engines, making it easier for prospective customers to find your company.

 

SMO relates to your search engine optimization or SEO. SEO is trying to better the chances that your company will show up in a search engine. It is the organic growth online that can bring your company rankings in the search engine while a prospect is searching for something similar to what you are offering.

 

The way that the two are connected is that if you are posting blogs and social media content that is relevant to the prospect it raises your chances for them to organically find your business.

 

For example, if you are a company that sells swimming pools, good articles might be on topics such as how to treat the water, when is the best time to close your pool‒ topics that are relevant to the consumer. When someone who has a pool is searching for these questions and your blog comes up they are able to have their question answered, but also have an awareness of your company.

 

If you are devoting time to social media and blogs it can directly increase your visibility on search engines. This will help get your business website closer to a prospect. Focusing on SMO and SEO will increase the traffic of users on your site, hopefully turning them into customers.
